Price List...

This was a quickie for the guys at The Pad.

They wanted a price list doing for the bar as the one they had was insufficient for the job as the writing was tiny.

I decided to do the price list along the theme of a receipt, creating an interesting yet informative piece...the one they chose is above, showing the logo as a barcode font and the font used for the list resembles the type used on a printed receipt.

Forgot to tell you guys...

I'm so sorry, but I forgot to tell you guys that a couple of months ago, I did a collaboration with a few of my friends from uni for an online magazine called Creature Mag.

They kindly let us create an issue for their online magazine. The theme was 'Friendship', and as you will see from the issue, there are various styles of illustrations from us portraying this subject...

Enjoy by visiting the link below, plus we would love to hear your comments...

Manic Mondays...

Above are the new installments for The Pad night that they are starting up for students on a Monday night...

I have taken on the theme of the well-known 'student pinboard', using scanned images of various notepaper and self tea stained papers, along with photographed images of pins, I have created a poster and flyer simulating the feel of the 'student pinboard'. As there was a lot of information to put on both items, I decided that to put each bit onto separate pieces of 'paper' as a way of differentiating between them. This way making it a lot easier to read.

Liberty & Index on Censorship Live Project...

The pictures are above pictures are the results after the first presentation and feedback. With the clients liking aspects from all routes, I have combined the three. Using the font from route three, the image from route two and the idea of black ink and colourful paper from route one.

With the ideas in place they also would like me to use this imagery to create a small animation to be able to be sent via email (this will be put up on this blog once final).

The whole marketing idea will also be used on placards and, with the help of volunteers, will be taken around universities to promote the event, so this idea will be in relation with the whole event theme of protest.

Liberty & Index on Censorship Live Project...

Above are a couple of examples of the first ideas for the live project for Liberty and Index on Censorship.

The brief is to design an iconic, engaging idea that incorporated image and text that will appeal to students and encourage them to be part of the event to promote protest.

I started by researching the whole image of protesting and realised that most imagery that arose was of the protestors themselves holding boards with handwritten slogans on. I took this idea and made three different fonts from handwritten/handmade elements (these can be seen on my flickr page). Combining these with handmade images, symbols related to protest, I created these three routes.

First route was created by using just type, and using this as the imagery as well, the only ink used would be black and thus reducing the cost of printing as the budget is £500. The posters and flyers will be printed onto colourful paper to make it stand out and still be coloured, just not through ink. Second route is similar, however it uses an image and different font to create another appearance. The image is of simply drawn protestors, which can be transfered to various medium, including badges and t-shirts. This is to be printed onto white paper to make a statement. Third route is using colour, so slightly more expensive with printing, The image is of a bird, symolising freedom, which has been handsewn for a handmade look.

UAL...

Above are two illustrations for the UAL website glossary. A couple of my fellow students have been asked to illustrate the glossary and, to make it a bit more varied, they asked a few of us to help and illustrate a couple of words each.

I had ''Communication'' and ''Formal/Visual Elements''. The monster billowing the smoke message of 'Yarp' is all about old methods of communication...trying to move away from the old idea of two people talking. The second in the robot being made up of building blocks...showing how an image is being made from various elements.
Unfortunately no colour, only greyscale, could be used, but I think this makes it look like an ols style illustrated children's book, so not all bad.

Postcard...

I received this postcard today from my parents and I though it was an awesome picture, which can be interpreted in so many ways...one of which is rather fantastical...a little like it should be an illustration for Angela Carter's ''The Bloody Chamber''...

Killa Kela

Above is the final poster I have designed for the Killa Kela night being held at The Pad Nightclub in Bedford. Through my work with Dirty Disko I was asked to design the main poster for this night.

Moving away from the standard microphone picture, I decided to play on the fact that beatboxing can sound much like a person who has a ghettoblaster for a mouth, hence the main image. I was given the logo and mimicked that for the place and date bubble. I was asked to make the poster bright to catch the eye of the passer-by. Through research, I looked at the posters that will surround it and took the colours that would most stand out...it is completely different to what is up at the moment, so won't blend in with the others.

Going to print today...

Dirty Disko...

I have been asked to design the new flyers for a night called Dirty Disko, which puts on a variety of electro, dubstep, trance etc music nights at The Pad nightclub. They have recently wanted to put a more illustrative look to their flyers and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. After eavesdropping and flashing my card, I am all set to help them illustratise their promotional items. Above are the initial ideas for both logos and characters. The first picture will be the basis of the flyer / poster for their next night. I have posted some other type and pictoral logos that will be used in future promo items. Keep looking for updates as they get printed and as more ideas come on board. htt...

Abram Games

I went to an exhibition today showing some of the works of Abram Games...really interesting! If you about in Bedford, check out the Bedford Gallery where it is being held until October. The lithograph prints are still so bright and colourful, with sneaky peeks into his sketchwork too.

These are a couple of the prints I picked up.

One of the things I noted from reading the blurb is a quote:

''I never work large because posters seen from a distance are small. If ideas don't work an inch high, they will never work.'' - A Games.

Apparently, only until he was completely happy with a piece of work would he put a full-stop after his signature.
